A very blue palette

More blue palette, originally uploaded by dillusional_confusion.

Just been playing around with my newest camera, the diminutive Sony NEX-5. I don't think a camera has impressed me more than this one - though I did have fairly low expectations.

Might have to do a review.

Anyways, the pic is of pallets. I think these particular ones are what the sand arrives on in Milton Keynes shopping centre (explanation: we have an indoor 'beach', for kids during the summer).

  1. I ended up on your blog after viewing a test photograph of yours on Flickr.
The photograph in question was taken using a Nex5 and 35mm f2.5 color skopar.

There has been discussion about color casts and corner smearing using this lens on the nex.
I did not notice much of this on your test photo.

What is your opinion on the performance of this lens on the nex ?

    Thank you for your time.

  2. Hi B, thanks for the question!

From my tests, I can see no problems with this lens on the NEX5 at all - corners seem sharp and bright. All the 'TEST' photos taken with this lens on my flickr area were processed using whatever default settings that Lightroom chooses, but I know that it did not apply any lens corrections by default.

Taking my above statement into account, it's worth considering that I don't tend to worry excessively about the technical aspects of corner performance in my photos. My time using film gave me a favourite vignetted look and I often use a manual vignette to reproduce this, which destroys corner performance anyway. This is also matched to my own opinion that bright corners are a distraction to the eye. Clearly if there was a serious drop in performance, I would notice it, but I don't often put anything compositionally relevant in the corners of my photos, so I might have missed something!

I tried to use some evenly illuminated scenes in my test images, and I hope that these show that there is little to no drop in corner performance. I'll try to post some more tests... I'm in the process of writing a kind-of-review on the NEX5 which will include some more thoughts on manual lenses.

    Thanks for your interest!

  3. Thank you for the very helpful response.

Before seeing your test photos, I had already purchased three Voigtlander-Cosina lens in Nikon S mount and an S/NEX adapter(50mm 1.5, 50mm 2.5, 85mm 3.5).

I omitted buying the 35mm 2.5 as the 16mm kit lens when cropped to 24mm will give a 36mm equivalent output at 6.3 megapixels. As i haven't received the lenses nor the camera yet(!), I'm hoping that using the kit lens in this manner will give adequate results as a 24-36 mm "digitally zoomed" walk around lens.

If this doesn't work out as i intended, i will purchase the the 35mm color skopar or maybe an old Leica 35mm 3.5 Sumaron.

Thanks again for your help and insight.

    Salutations,

    B.
